New Year Eve BBQ

First of all, I would like to thank Kak Nani for agreeing to be the host for Tok Nani's family BBQ. The initial plan was for me to throw the party at Astaka Heights, at the swimming pool area, on the eve of new year.

I totally forgot that JMB will be organising its second year of new year countdown. So I proposed Pak Nit's instead. However, logictically speaking, the new place seems not that conducive for a big family event.

NY Celebration @Astaka Heights

One of the good thing I like about the JMB of Astaka Heights is their effort to promote interaction amongst the residents of this 4 years plus neighbourhood.

This is their second time of new year countdown.

I was there the first time they organised it on 2011 new year eve. And it was really like a big family gathering. They held games, karaoke session, lucky draws, of course, makan-makan, and the lighthight of the night was the countdown itself with a brief fireworks display to mark the coming of 2011.

And this year, they add a theme, which is Hawaian Night and there will be best dressed awards to those who dress the best according to the theme.

Unfortunately, I won't be attending this because I've a family BBQ in Salak Tinggi.

My whole family members will be joining Mak Lang's family for a makan-makan project. If it turns out to be a success, insya Allah, we will have it as our annual affair with more participation from other family members.

Ulang Terbit: Anak Itik

Anak Itik

Anak itik itu hitam gelap
macam bontot kuali,
tak pun macam Muthusamy
yang menjual kacang di bawah pokok Melaka
sebelah Muzium Samudera.

Anak itik itu busuk

macam kentut budak bujang rumah depan,
tak pun macam air rendaman kain
yang terbiar seminggu tak berbasuh
tengik.

Dan anak itik itu pemalu.

Tapi anak itik itu

putih hatinya
wangi kelakunya
garang kejujurannya.

Dan anak itik itu

tidak menyalah sesiapa
kalau berlaku bencana
dan tidak tuding jari
bila ada kesalahan pada kertas kerja
yang ingin dibentangkan kepada Ibu bank.

Melalak, Melalak Lagi

This time around, the attendees were Geng KY members, minus Eijam who was busy preparing for his exams and Mitch who was out of town if I'm not mistaken.

We started the night with a dinner at our favourite hangout spot, no other than Kedai Kak Yah (I think we should renamed the group as Geng KKY). I, however, had to give it a pass due to some technicalities and traffic jam at the flyover of Jalan Pandan Indah and MMR2 interchange.

And I don't know why my mood wasn't there too, whereby I only song 3 songs - my compulsory opening number, J. Mizan's Hari Ini Dan Semalam, my second attempts of Afghan's Padamu Ku Bersujud and Kaer's Izin Ku Pergi.

Mus did complain about my anti-social behaviour on the night, whereby I was busy surfing on iPhoneKu than paying attention of my friends' colourful renditions of Malaysian as well as international hits. Sorry Mus and I'm really, really sorry guys. It won't happen happen. Insya Allah.

But the hightlight of the night is when Mus sang his first ever Malay song in any of the karaoke outings that I've joined him all this while.

Nak lagi, Mus!!!

After melalak, we stopped by at Q Bistro for a light supper before we call it a day. Once again, I'm really sorry guys for sleeping at the table while all of you were catching out with each other. I'm sure all of you saw fir yourselves how struggling I was to keep my eyes open. Once again, MAAF banyak-banyk.

Silence of The Lambs Added to Film Archive

This film is one of my all-time favourite films, which introduced me to great actors - (Sir) Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.

The thing I like about this movie is the characterisation of Hannibal Lecter which was never black (or white). That was the first time a film made me thinking that a human being is grey. And it's the first movie that I did not loath its antagonist. Normally, you're either dislike or feel indifferent towards the bad guys in a film. But not Dr. Lecter.

Nak tahu, pi cari DVDnya :)

Oscar-winning 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs is to be preserved by the US Library of Congress as part of its National Film Registry.

The film - in which Sir Anthony Hopkins made his first appearance as serial killer Hannibal Lecter - was one of 25 new additions announced.

Others include Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks, classic Disney animation Bambi and Charlie Chaplin's The Kid.

The titles were chosen from 2,228 films nominated by the public.

Every new addition must be considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant in order to be added to the registry.

Other additions include the 1979 Sally Field film Norma Rae, Robert Rodriguez's 1992 debut feature El Mariachi and the 1953 version of War of the Worlds.

They are joined by such lesser-known titles as A Computer Animated Hand - a one-minute film made in 1972 that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation.

The oldest entries are silent films dating from 1912. One documents the pre-World War I child labour reform movement, while the other is a farce starring comic actor John Bunny.

Gump, which won Hanks his second Oscar for best actor in 1995, is the most recent of the new additions.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," said James H Billington, who has been the US Congress librarian since 1987.

"Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

The Return of Bird Flu Outbreak?

The wife of a colleague of mine has been admitted for H1N1 last weekend. He and his kids have been advised to self-quarantined at home. I heard it all re-started in Hong Kong. But I don't think the wife had been to Hong Kong, but she was in Kedah last one week or two.

I don't have the details but all of us have been told to stay alert with our temperature. This morning, we got our body temperature read by an administrative staff. Alhamdulillah, my reading was 36.4 Celsius.

My two cent is to drink plenty of plain water, take multivitamins continuously and limit outdoor activities. To those who coughs, please and please wear the face mask. Do your part, please...

Hong Kong orders chicken cull as bird flu alert raised

Hong Kong is culling 17,000 chickens after three birds were confirmed to have died from the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain in the past week.

The government has banned imports and the sale of live chickens for three weeks after an infected chicken carcass was found at a wholesale market on Tuesday.

It has also raised the city's flu alert system to "serious".

Two wild birds were also found to have died of the the virus.

The government said it was tracing the source of the chicken carcass, but it was not clear whether the chicken came from a local farm or was imported.

"I understand that it will cause inconvenience to the public, and the poultry trade will also encounter losses," said Hong Kong's secretary for food and health, York Chow.

"However, to safeguard public health, we need to adopt decisive and effective measures to prevent and control the spread of the virus."

On Tuesday, a dead Oriental magpie found at a secondary school tested positive for bird flu.

Another secondary school closed for a day for disinfection last Friday after a dead black-headed gull was found with the virus.

Hong Kong is quick to take action against infectious diseases after an outbreak of the deadly respiratory disease SARS in 2003 killed 300 people in the city and a further 500 worldwide.

In 2009, 300 people were placed under quarantine at a Hong Kong hotel after a guest contracted swine flu.

Melalak Lagi

Encik OC seperti biasa mendendangkan lagu-lagu bernada tinggi. Cuma hari ini, semput sikit. Bak kata Shikin, penambahan saiz badan! Hehehe.

Cuma rezeki sahaja jadi pertaruhan.

My Heartfelt Condolence To Washi Storm Victims

It was reported that more than 1000 people have been killed after tropical storm Washi lashed the southen island of Mindanao and surrounding areas over the weekend.

Be strong. And He will show you the way as promised in His Book.

“And certainly, We shall test you with a bit of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits. But give glad tidings to the patient ones who, when afflicted with a calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” They are those upon whom are the blessings, descend from their Lord, and they receive His Mercy, and it is they who are guided.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155-157)

“Verily, We have created man from drops of mixed semen in order to test him, so We made him hearer, seer. Verily, We showed him the way, so he is either grateful or ungrateful.” (Surah al-Insan 76: 2-3)

Majlis Naik Buaian

Ombak Rindu

Aku tak tahu kenapa mamat ni terkejut bila aku cakap nak beli tiket filem karya terbaru Osman Ali, Ombak Rindu.

Memang happening and staff pun memang sporting.

Anyhow, all the best to all participants! And also my officemates that have been made to perform on that night. Perform baik-baik tau!

Selamat Bersidang

Ulang Terbit: Rindu Terlarang

Rindu Terlarang

Rinduku padamu
hanya Tuhan tahu
hebat penangannya.

Matamu yang memanah hati

bibirmu yang mengucup bibir ini
tubuhmu yang menekap tubuhku
melekat kukuh dalam ingatan
umpama baru semalam kita bersama
menganyam cinta.

Biar dipisah tujuh lautan

dibenteng tujuh banjaran
kau tahu aku faham
itu hanya zahir cuma.

Aku rindumu

hanya Tuhan tahu
hebat penangannya.

Bila lagi kita bisa bersama

membebas ghairah
mencantum hati nan terbelah
sebelum datang lagi rasa bersalah.

15 of the World's Weirdest Museums

Malaysia, in particular, the historical city of Melaka is under the radar again. This time, one of her museums, is recognised by CNN.com as Top 15 of the weirdest museums in the world. The museum was first called People's Museum, before being renamed to Museum of Enduring Beauty.

I, myself, have yet to visit this museum. Insya Allah, will include it in my itinerary for my incoming homecoming trip.

Our advice on beauty? Just brush your hair and smile.

Good hair day? On the third floor of the People's Museum in Malaysia is a monument to the extremes people will go to feel pretty, oh so pretty.

The records go back to the very beginnings of human history, revealing some of the outrageous concepts of beauty people will conform to: bound feet, insertion of round disks into their mouths, molding heads into oval shapes and much more.

Bring your own mirror; you'll feel a lot better about your own appearance after leaving this gallery of "real beauty."

Don't Miss: A display of how several tribes elongate the neck with brass rings or stretch ear lobes with plates. Take an aspirin after your look.

In Malaysia, Muslim preachers now wear tudung

November 22, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 — Already accounting for more than 60 per cent of undergraduates and over half of civil servants, Malay-Muslim women are now breaking into the male bastion of Islamic preaching.

In a New York Times (NYT) article published yesterday, it was reported that two local new reality TV programmes are shining a spotlight on the rise of women in the male-dominated arena of religion.

The reason for this phenomena, the paper appeared to suggest, was because there was a significant gender role in Islam that could only be filled by women.

"We need women preachers, rather than men," 21-year-old Siti Adibah Zulkepli, 21 a contestant on the reality TV show "Solehah" (translated as "pious" in Arabic) was cited as saying by the NYT.

"Because they don't face what we are facing — health problems, how to manage the house, how to manage the children. The woman knows better," she added.

It also cited Greg Barton, acting director of the Center for Islam and the Modern World at Monash University in Melbourne, as saying it would be a mistake to dismiss the significance of Malaysian women's expanding engagement in Islamic education.

Both "Solehah" and "Ustazah Pilihan", which the newspaper translated as "'ideal female preacher' in Malay" are burnishing the image of female preachers here and show how women "can shape and nurture potential leaders of the future", the paper said.

Citing Zaleha Kamaruddin, the first female rector appointed to head the International Islamic University here, the NYT said Malaysia was carving a new path for women in Islam.

"I think Malaysia has started to break the glass ceiling and is trying to be one of the modern Muslim countries," she was reported saying.

Despite the massive headway, the NYT observed that Malaysian Muslim women were still barred from leading prayers.

It cited Perak mufti, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria saying he welcomed the growing number of women teaching Islam, but insisted they could not lead Friday prayers in front of mixed congregations.

"They can preach Islam to the men, but they cannot lead the prayers for men," the NYT reported Harrusani saying.

Letters, Land Title & Graduation

I was away from home since the eve of Eid Adha. I went home to my parents' in Melaka. Besides celebrating eid, I helped my sister looking after her first child, a daughter which happened to be my first niece. Also, I was helping my parents with the preparation of my youngest sister's wedding.

I returned home yesterday after sending my sister and her hubby off to the airport. They have gone to Bali for their much awaited honeymoon. I hope they will have a whale of great time there.

And last night, while waiting for Yusof and Arbain to pick me up, I bumped into my new housemate, Harees. He just got back from work. That was our second encounter since becoming housemate on the eve of 9th Zulkaedah. Yusof once again brought me to Restoran Jet for our favourite char kway teow.

This morning, I was doing nothing at home. Just laid on my bed, surfing the Internet. An hour before afternoon, I decided to go to Tiram Travel at Dataran Palma to pay for the requested deposits. Rozain (soft spoken chap with well maintained goatee and sweet smile) gave me a few copies of booklets, together with the official receipt.

Later, I went to collect my letters from the letterbox. And look what I found in it. The invitation letter from the International Islamic University Malaysia for the graduation ceremony which has been scheduled on 3 December 2011.

To those who do not know, I took up a 9-month certificate programme on Islamic Law late last year. Alhamdulillah, I managed to complete it last March. Actually, I'm very looking forward to attending this ceremony, which is my first time to experience the Malaysian-style graduation ceremony.

According to the letter, I need to pick up the robe by this weekend. This means I could bring home the robe to Melaka so that I could take a couple of pictures with my family wearing the graduation gown.

Tak sabar!

Selamat Pengantin Baru Niza & Fauzi

Semoga berbahagia santak ke akhir hayat.

Please forgive me that I do not have a single picture of the reception at the bride's side. In case you didn't know, I was in the ER of Hospital Melaka, suspected of snake bite.

On the hari langsung itself, I was busy entertaining the guests.

In fact, there was no picture of the family with the mempelai. Only my parents and the pengantins. I guess, it was because the pelamin was inside the house, unlike the two previous weddings, whereby the pelamins were outside the house.

Anyhow, the ceremonies - all three - akad nikah, malam berinai and hari langsung went off smoothly. And the weather was very kind too.

On behalf of the family, I would like to thank all - families and friends for helping out with the wedding and made it a success. Your presence meant a lot to us and only Allah could repay your support and generousity.

To the mempelais, once again, Selamat Pengantin Baru. Semoga berbahagia santak ke akhir hayat. Aamin...

Kasih Ibu Buat Si Anak

Tanda Kasih Kakak Kepada Adik

Night at A Farmosa

My friends came down to Melaka to attend my sister's wedding. They stayed at Mahkota Hotel. There are five of them, namely, Mus, Sham, Eijam, AJ and Shah.

Since I was very occupied during daytime, I could only joined them at night.

At first, I was planning to bring them to Jonker Street. Later, I found out that the area was packed with participants and fans of body building competition. If I'm not mistaken, they held the 3rd World Body Building Championship here in Melaka. I'm puzzled why they chose Jonker Walk as the venue.

In fact, the boys already strolled the infamous street themselves in the afternoon.

Instead, I met them at Mc Donalds! Nazrol was later joined us after meeting Geng Bebudak Melaka. They cannot stayed long because Fendy and Ed need to go to bed early because they will be going to Jempol for another make-up job. Similarly, Nazri need to attend a state function on the next morning.

As usual, we started our gathering with latest updates on what happened in Kuala Lumpur for the last one week plus that I'd left the city. Some are juicy indeed, some are boring. Then, the bashing part. As always, it was all about "negeri maju" vs. "metropolis kulaijaya".

If AJ didn't remind us how late it was, we could have continue talking until subuh! Before we dismiss, we promised to meet again for brunch at Restoran Ayam Golek Bachang.

Qurban: a spiritual celebration

Damia Batrisya

This is the first post about my first niece. She was born on 1.11.11 at 7.41pm at Hospital Melaka.

Both mother and daughter were healthy. Anyhow, Damia had been admitted last Friday due to yellow. Alhamdulillah she has been discharged this morning. Syukur.

Update: No-Halal Logo Food Stalls @Viva Home

My enquiry has been forwarded to Jakim but the Management Company for Viva Home.

I'm a bit puzzled here. Are they saying that they themselves do not know whether or not the food stalls in their own food court have been halally certified!?!

Pelik!

Anyhow, let us give them benefit of the doubt.

Satu lagi, pihak Hotline, The Malay Mail tidak menghubungi aku lansung. Hmmm...

Dear Sir/Madam,
Good day. I've visited our foodcourt last Saturday and noticed that most of the stalls did not display the Halal logo, except for Western food stall. Just to confirm with your side, is the food sold in the said foodcourt really Halal? As you may aware, some of the patrons to Viva Home are Muslims, and like me, would appreciate it if you could ensure that your Muslim customers could get Halal food while shopping in your premise.

Thank you.

Kereta Siapakah Ini?

I drove my cousin to the 3S Honda Sungai Long to collect his new car.

Dua Petang Berpuisi

Semalam aku, Danny dan Hani bertarung dalam Temasya Pantun 2011. Lawan kami, Emas Kencana, merupakan juara bertahan.

Mereka turun dengan berpakaian songket.

Mereka berbincang sesama sendiri semasa membeli pantun-pantun kami.

Emas Kencana sekali lagi berjaya mempertahankan kejuaraan mereka. Tahniah uols ;)

Usage of Bahasa Melayu

The Government should have implement this policy much earlier. Anyhow, it's better late than never. I personally think this is a good policy.

In this regard, I would also think that the Government should remain firm on the PSSMI. National schools should use national language, except for non-BM language classes. And the government should not entertain the political threat from PAGE on this matter. Let them be in the same category as PERKASA and HINDRAF as the champion for "politik ugut mengugut".

One more thing, I really hope that both camps would ensure that all of their candidates for the incoming general election are fluent in Bahasa Melayu. It is sad to hear those politicians speak pathetic BM.

JPA arah urusan rasmi agensi awam guna penuh Bahasa Kebangsaan

Oleh G Manimaran
October 31, 2011
