Three years and many anxious moments later...

Three years and many anxious moments later...

CYBERSPACE is abuzz with Bunohan. It has been a while since netizens were really interested in a movie. Helmed by Dain Said, it features some of the best local actors - Faizal Hussein, Wan Hanafi Su, Namron, Zahril Adzim, Bront Palarae and Pekin Ibrahim.
There is another movie that had been eagerly awaited -- Hanyut, based on Joseph Conrad's Almayer's Folly. U-Wei Haji Shaari took the challenge of adapting to screen one of Conrad's most difficult Malayan novels.

U-Wei, who made his mark with Perempuan, Isteri Dan... in 1993, is currently one of the finest and most audacious directors in the country. He made Kaki Bakar, Joghro and Buai Laju-Laju.

U-Wei learned a lot from the making of Perempuan, Isteri Dan..., one of which is creative control. The film was budgeted for RM1.2 million, but he was forced to work with a lot less. It was the time when even RM500,000 was considered too expensive for a Malay film.

Even today, he believes the film would have had a different look and nuance had he been given enough money. Nevertheless, the film made waves -- it won a commercial and critical acclaim.

He made Kaki Bakar in 1995 with renowned stage actor Khalid Salleh, who was discovered by the late Krishen Jit in the early 1980s. In 1998, he made Joghro based on Juara, a novel by S. Othman Kelantan who later became our Sasterawan Negara (National Laureate). Hanyut is his biggest gamble -- at RM18 million, it is one of Malaysia's most expensive films ever. The budget for the Art Department alone was six times the total amount spent on Perempuan, Isteri Dan....

He fought hard to raise money and he prevailed. He was given a grant of RM5 million from the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry  and a loan of RM10 million from a bank.

He learned something else from the bank. They were using templates from the construction business in dealing with him. They wanted to know whether the film had been pre-sold, just as the number of houses or apartments booked would determine the viability of a development project.

It took him more than a year to convince the bank to part with their money.

The 51-day shoot went well despite hundreds of cast and crew involved. The post-production was delayed as he needed more funds. In all, it took U-Wei three years to finish the film and much anxiety. He is philosophical about it.

"Many legendary filmmakers took longer to do their masterpieces," he told me. "For me, the journey is just beginning."

Why take the trouble to make an expensive movie when horror and gangster movies are raking in tonnes of money? Or when a love story is making more than the cost of producing Hanyut?

U-Wei has no problems with "other films" but he wants to make movies that outsiders would say, "Ah, this is a movie to watch" and locals would be happy to say, "Ah, this is the kind of movie that ought to be made."
He believes it is important for Bunohan to succeed or else serious films would not have a place in the country. If it fails commercially, Hanyut would have a problem, so too the soon-to-be-released Hari-Hari Terakhir Seorang Seniman based on Anwar Rithwan's novel of the same name, helmed by Sabri Yunus, last year's Anugerah Skrin winner of the best director award.
He acknowledges there is a big market for Malay movies now, thus the reason why 50 were made last year. For the industry to survive, we have to provide "different menus". Learn the lessons of Indonesian and Hindi films during their heydays, he reminds young filmmakers.

He wants Hanyut to be perfect. His director of photography was Arkadiusz Tomiak, a Pole. The rest of the crew came from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Japan, not to mention Malaysia.

His leading actor is Peter O'Brien, an Australian, while Diana Danielle, Sofia Jane, Sabri Yunus and Ady Putra are notable local and Singapore stars. He brought in a "scenic  artist" from Australia who specialises in "aging" the props. The film was shot entirely with Panavision cameras, for the first time in Malaysia. The musical score would have been done by Ryuichi Sakamoto of The Last Emperor fame had the composer not withdrawn after the tsunami affected him last year.

Hanyut will soon be playing at a cinema near you. Movie enthusiasts are holding their collective breaths to see if Conrad's folly will be U-Wei's. Or if it will make movie history in the country.

If Hanyut is successful, movie-making will never be the same again.

Life of Pi

Ang Lee talks about risks, spirituality of ‘Life of Pi’

November 24, 2012

NEW YORK, Nov 24 — Gay cowboy drama “Brokeback Mountain” may have been considered a risky film to make, but director Ang Lee said his new movie, “Life of Pi,” a 3D exploration of faith about a boy stranded on a boat with a Bengal tiger, is his riskiest yet.
The film, which was released in US theatres this week, is adapted from Yann Martel's best-selling novel of the same name and was once considered impossible to make.
Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Lee, 58, took on the laborious task of using computer-generated imagery to bring the sensational plot to the big screen, taking a year and a half just to edit the film together.
The director talked to Reuters about the film's themes, technical barriers and casting an unknown actor in the lead.
Q. Why was “Life of Pi” considered unfilmable?
A. “Because you cannot make the tiger do everything you want to do, you have to use digital. A digital animal, up until two years ago, was not totally realistic yet, let alone in 3D, and then water is pretty difficult.”
Q. Was this your most difficult filming experience yet?
A. “Oh yes. And it was also the longest ... there was the technical difficulty and then it is a big movie. And it was across continents, I finally decided to shoot most of it in Taiwan, but we also had to go to India to shoot for two to three weeks. Because you can't fake Pondicherry, and Munnar. And then we have scenes in Canada.”
Q. But Brokeback Mountain was a risky film too?
A. “No, that wasn't for me. At least when I made it, I thought it was strictly arthouse and few people would see it. And it's a lot cheaper (to make). So I didn't care...And then I got nervous, 'Oh they are going to lynch me, making a gay cowboy movie, that will go into a shopping mall.'“
Q. It was only after you made it you realised that?
A. “Yes, I was afraid. I was looking around when I walked, when I would go home, to see if anybody was following me. Once it hit the shopping mall I was nervous, actually. My brother is a distributor in Taiwan and I told him not to buy it. He hates me to this day, he is still babbling about it.”
Q. Why choose unknown Suraj Sharma to play Pi?
A. “I wanted someone authentic, and no bad habits, that means you have to train them from the start.”
Q. Why did you replace Tobey Maguire and reshoot his scenes with the little-known Rafe Spall?
A. “It was a small part, and he is a big movie star. He is a good old friend of mine and he would do this for nothing, for me. But he is not doing anything (in the role), he is just sitting there listening most of the time. It becomes a little distracting I think.”
Q. How does the film explore spirituality?
A. “To me, faith can be elusive, but … As a Taoist would say, 'That's the apple's truth.' The source of all the material comes from nothingness, illusion is working more on things you can prove. That's the principle, the essence of life, it is actually an illusion, not immaterial. That's worth pursuing. So illusion is not nothing. In a way, that is the truth.”
“Sometimes I feel (illusions) are more of life's essence, I can trust them more than real life that is full of deceit and covering up.”
Q. Did exploring faith encourage you to make this?
“The book is fascinating, it talks about faith. But it didn't make me believe in God or anything...I didn't go to church or a temple after that. When I started making the movie, you do feel faith embody you and carry you through. But when I picked the subject, and chose to do the book, it was actually more storytelling in my mind. The value of storytelling. How people share a story. Because a story has structure, it has a beginning, middle and end. It seems to have meaning, where life has not.”
Q. Do you practice any religion?
A. “No, my mother is a baptised Christian, so she made me go to church every Sunday, and I prayed four times a day until I was 14. And at lunchtime kids at school would giggle at my praying ... I stopped praying. And two weeks later, nothing happened to me, so I didn't pick it up again.”
“I am not particularly religious. But I think we do face the question of where God is, why we are created and where does life go, why we exist. That sort of thing. And it is very hard to talk about it these days, because it cannot be proven. It is hard to discuss it rationally.”
Q. Do you consider yourself spiritual?
A. “I hate to think life is just facts and laws. And I am a filmmaker, I am a sensitive person, I like to think it is spiritual, so I like people to be more in that way. I think life without spirit is in the dark, it is absurd. Call it illusion or call it faith, whatever you call it, we have emotional attachment to the unknown. We yearn to find out. That is human nature. It can be, in a way, unrequited love, we don't know. I don't have a particular God I pray to, except sometimes a movie god.” (laughs) — Reuters

Berkecil Hati Seorang Sutradara

It all started when YB Khairy Jamaluddin was raving about the newest Malay film in town, Bunohan. YB KJ didn't stop there but made a brief comparison with Ahmad Idham's Hantu Bonceng! He said, "Bunohan was excellent. Deep metaphors, great dialogue & accomplished cinematography. Def not Hantu Bonceng genre. Msian cinematic art".

Come on, Ahmad Idham! Act like an adult. You were smiling from one ear to another when people praised (definitely, I'm NOT one of them), but cannot accept criticism at all?

Siapa suruh buat filem yang macam itu! You win in the short run, but I doubt people will ever remember it in the next decade.

It's your call, man. Be a responsible karyawan :)

p/s: anybody would like to join to watch this film @Viva tonight?

Melancholia Named Best Film of 2011

I was first introduced to Lars Von Trier in 1996 by my college-mate, Aidil Rusli. Yeap, the front man of Couple. He brought us to a laser disc outlet to watch The Kingdom. I was really impressed with this 5-hour film, which was edited from eight-episodes of Danish miniseries.

Check it out on IMDB for details of the film.

The other Lars Von Trier's film that I managed to watch is Dancer In The Dark, which he won the coveted Palm d'Or while his controversial leading actress, Bjork walked away with Best Actress award.

I'm dying to watch his other films such as The Idiots, Breaking The Waves, Dogville and of course, Melancholia. I could have just download these films from the Internet, but it does not feel right.

Well, just wish me luck. Lots of luck ;)

US critics reward Lars Von Trier film Melancholia

Kirsten Dunst and Lars Von TrierKirsten Dunst and Lars Von Trier have both missed out on Golden Globe nominations

Lars Von Trier's movie Melancholia has been named the best film of 2011 by the US National Society of Film Critics.

The film portrays two sisters facing up to the end of the world. Its star Kirsten Dunst was named best actress by the 58-strong panel of critics.

Von Trier, who was expelled from the Cannes Film Festival in May after saying he sympathised with Hitler, missed out on the best director prize.

That award was won by Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life.

Brad Pitt won the best actor accolade for his role in baseball drama Moneyball.

Critics' awards are seen as key steps towards the Oscars. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have one more week to vote for Oscar nominees, with the nominations announced on 24 January.

But neither Melancholia nor Dunst have been nominated for the Golden Globes, seen as Hollywood's second most prestigious prizes, before they are handed out on 15 January.

Silence of The Lambs Added to Film Archive

This film is one of my all-time favourite films, which introduced me to great actors - (Sir) Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.

The thing I like about this movie is the characterisation of Hannibal Lecter which was never black (or white). That was the first time a film made me thinking that a human being is grey. And it's the first movie that I did not loath its antagonist. Normally, you're either dislike or feel indifferent towards the bad guys in a film. But not Dr. Lecter.

Nak tahu, pi cari DVDnya :)

Oscar-winning 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs is to be preserved by the US Library of Congress as part of its National Film Registry.

The film - in which Sir Anthony Hopkins made his first appearance as serial killer Hannibal Lecter - was one of 25 new additions announced.

Others include Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks, classic Disney animation Bambi and Charlie Chaplin's The Kid.

The titles were chosen from 2,228 films nominated by the public.

Every new addition must be considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant in order to be added to the registry.

Other additions include the 1979 Sally Field film Norma Rae, Robert Rodriguez's 1992 debut feature El Mariachi and the 1953 version of War of the Worlds.

They are joined by such lesser-known titles as A Computer Animated Hand - a one-minute film made in 1972 that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation.

The oldest entries are silent films dating from 1912. One documents the pre-World War I child labour reform movement, while the other is a farce starring comic actor John Bunny.

Gump, which won Hanks his second Oscar for best actor in 1995, is the most recent of the new additions.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," said James H Billington, who has been the US Congress librarian since 1987.

"Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

Why I like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button instead!

Atas sebab-sebab inilah, aku merasakan filem The Curious Case of Benjamin Button lebih layak dinobatkan sebagai Filem Terbaik berbanding Slumdog Millionaire.

I.N.T.A. pasti membungakan kebahagiaan abadi.

A. Razak Mohaiden gagal memanfaatkan premis ceritanya.
