Is Hang Tuah fact or fiction?

*****************************************************

The historical status of Hang Tuah is now the subject of debate in Malaysian circles.
ASK Malaysians what they think of Hang Tuah and most would probably say they see him as a real figure/hero who was an integral part of the history of Malacca in particular and Malaysia in general.
While there always seem to be questions about his ethnicity and origin, there seems to be a general belief that he was a real warrior who displayed virtues of bravery and loyalty to his king.

Heroic role: The legend of Hang Tuah has been immortalised in films, as in the 1957 movie ‘Hang Tuah’ with Tan Sri P. Ramlee playing the role, and in the 2004 ‘Puteri Gunung Ledang’ with singer-songwriter Datuk M. Nasir as Hang Tuah.

In fact Hang Tuah seems to be more ingrained in the memory of those who studied local history than any of the past Sultans of Malacca. His mausoleum is supposedly in Tanjung Kling while a well associated with him is in Kampung Duyung. And Hang Tuah supposedly grew up in Kampung Duyung, where there are families who claim to be his descendants.

So when historian Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Khoo Kay Khim said last week that there was no written record of Princess Hang Li Po, Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat and the stories that have made it into the history books are just myths, he opened a can of worms.

Overnight, the issue became one of the hottest topics in both the mainstream media and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter as Malaysians came out to debate it.

There were those who felt “betrayed” and asked if everything else they had learnt in History was false and mythical as well.

Twitter user Imran Syed Jaffar said it was pathetic that some Malaysians were arguing about Hang Tuah's authenticity. “Even Indonesians acknowledge his existence. (Is this an) effort to discredit Malay history?”
Hang Tuah, along with his four warrior friends Hang Jebat, Hang Lekiu, Hang Kasturi and Hang Lekir was said to have served the Malacca ruler Sultan Mansur Shah in the 15th century. Meanwhile, Hang Li Po was said to have come from China and was the fifth wife of Sultan Mansur Shah.

Datuk M. Nasir

In previous history textbooks, the story of Hang Tuah and his friends was given great prominence. In the current Form One History textbook, however, Hang Tuah is mentioned only in passing as a Laksamana (Admiral) and a brave warrior. There is no mention of Hang Li Po and the other Malacca warriors.
So is Hang Tuah a man or a myth? A fact or a fable? Reality or fiction?

Hang Tuah, who is said to have sworn that “Tak Melayu hilang di dunia” (Malays will never vanish from the earth), is mentioned in the semi-historical Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) and the Hikayat Hang Tuah.
Saying that Khoo is entitled to his opinion, Prof Datuk Dr Yusoff Hashim, vice-chancellor of the Malacca Islamic University College (KUIM), is steadfast in his belief that Hang Tuah was a historical figure. He points out that Hang Tuah is mentioned in 19 of the 28 chapters in Sejarah Melayu.

Dr Yusoff suspects the reason behind why some people don't believe in Hang Tuah is the embellishment of stories about him especially in the Hikayat Hang Tuah where the warrior is described as having super-human and mystical powers.

“The story has been made (so) flowery that the real essence of the figure is lost. He has been glorified too much that he became mystical or legendary,” says the historian.

It doesn't help that his story has been immortalised in films, as in the 1957 movie Hang Tuah with Tan Sri P. Ramlee playing the role, and in the 2004 Puteri Gunung Ledang with singer-songwriter Datuk M. Nasir as Hang Tuah.

Khoo has actually said that views on Hang Tuah were influenced greatly by public perception and not by actual facts.

“We get our view of what Hang Tuah was like from movies portrayed by the late P. Ramlee to the extent that even a painting of the legendary figure at the National Museum bore resemblance to the actor,” he has been quoted as saying.

Historian Dr Ranjit Singh Malhi says he understands Khoo's concerns and agrees that myths should not be included in History textbooks.

Without really committing his view on whether Hang Tuah existed or not, Dr Ranjit points out that the Sejarah Melayu, despite being littered with numerous myths, is regarded by certain leading historians including O. W. Wolters and C. Mary Turnbull as a useful historical work.

He says that even Encyclopaedia Britannica considers Sejarah Melayu as one of the finest literary and historical works in the Malay language concerning the Sultanate of Malacca.

Monument to a legend: The mausoleum in Tanjung Kling that is supposedly Hang Tuah’s. He is believed to have grown up in Kampung Duyung, where there are families who claim to be his descendants.

But he himself has doubts about the existence of Hang Li Po, saying that there is no mention of her in the Ming Dynasty Chinese records.

The Sejarah Melayu mentions Sultan Mansur Syah dispatching Tun Perpateh Puteh on a mission to China and that he returned with a Chinese princess (Hang Li Po) as wife for Mansur Syah and many Chinese followers who settled at Bukit China, Dr Ranjit says.

But, he adds, “We need to ascertain whether this is a historical fact or a mere myth to show the greatness of the Malaccan rulers.”

Josephine Chua, 55, who lives in Malacca and is particularly interested in the history of the state since her ancestors arrived there in 1765, reckons the issue of Hang Tuah and his friends is not that important in nation building or the history of the country.

Instead she believes the Sultans of Malacca had a more important role to play.

Having read both the Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Hang Tuah, Chua thinks they are more a compilation of stories rather than history books.

She says she has read several versions of the Sejarah Melayu (it is known that there are more than 20 versions) and believes there are too many inconsistencies among the different versions. When pressed if she believes that Hang Tuah existed, she uses the word “legendary”.

“It's very tricky because it's been in our schoolbooks. It might be something that needs to be looked into,” she says, adding that Hang Jebat was more of a hero to her than Hang Tuah.

As for Hang Li Po, Chua doubts that the Chinese would have allowed any of their princesses to become the fifth wife or a concubine of a Sultan.

Tunku Abidin Muhriz, president of think tank IDEAS, believes there were possibly several individuals whose deeds became known in time as the deeds of Hang Tuah.

He believes this is quite a normal way for myths and legends to come into being and evolve.

“I have seen conflicting evidence of the existence of a single person called Hang Tuah, but I think the imagery and symbolism of the story can have many positive applications,” he replies in an e-mail interview.

If you deny Hang Tuah’s existence, it means you also deny the whole historical text of the ‘Sejarah Melayu’. - Prof Datuk Dr Yusoff Hashim

He points out that the legend itself contains important themes such as loyalty, friendship and love, and that it allows us a glimpse into the political institutions of the past.

He believes that while it seems implausible that Hang Tuah did everything he purportedly did, these acts have been part of Malay folklore for a long time and it is only recently that academic doubts have been cast.

“I hypothesise that the story of Hang Tuah much like the stories of the English figures of Robin Hood or Sir Lancelot (at least according to some) was based on an actual individual, but other stories of heroism were combined and enhanced to make the stories more interesting and inspirational,” he says.

“Also, despite what some purists might say, learning about myths and legends in general may actually inspire young Malaysians to learn about real history later on,” adds Tunku Abidin.

Political scientist and historian Dr Farish A. Noor, who labels the whole debate as silly, believes it is irrelevant if Hang Tuah existed or not. While he agrees with Khoo, Dr Farish says the role Hang Tuah played in the shaping of political and social consciousness in Malaysia is more important.

“He is powerful in the sense that people turn to myths on how to live out their lives as there are certain models of behaviour. There are debates on who is the real hero Hang Tuah or Hang Jebat for instance,” he says.

Dr Farish also points out that at the end of Hikayat Hang Tuah, the warrior renounces politics and power to opt for salvation.

“He is not a Malay supremacist, if anything, but a wandering diplomat who had no sense of superiority or arrogance towards others,” he says, explaining that in the second part of Hikayat Hang Tuah, the current subject of controversy travelled to different parts of the world such as India, China and Turkey to embrace their cultures.

In a note later posted on Facebook, Dr Farish says that Hikayat Hang Tuah ought to be taught in our schools but only if it is taught in full and that equal emphasis is given to the development of the character who eventually becomes a universal figure, standing above narrow ethnic and political loyalties, and who sees the human race as his family and the world as his home.

“What a great message that would be for a new generation of global and globalising Malaysians!” says Dr Farish.

Question Time with KJ

Yahoo Malaysia menganjurkan sesi kedua Question Time bersama Yang Berhormat Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.

Jawapan: Jason Lo kawan baik saya. Saya kenal dia sejak kecil.

Soalan: YB, adakah YB masih mampu menjadi PM ketika berumur 40 tahun?
Jawapan: Hahaha. Ini fitnah! Urban legend.

Jawapan: Koresponden perang.

Soalan: Apa kelemahan PM kita?
Jawapan: Beliau suka lagu 'Nobody But You' oleh (Wondergirls)? Ini kelemahan yang buruk.

Soalan: Khairy, siapa penyanyi kegemaran kamu?
Jawapan: Tentulah bukan Wondergirls. Haha. Maaf DS Najib. Saya suka U2, Counting Crows dan Dave Mathews. Artis tempatan, saya suka Faizal Tahir. Beliau cool.

Soalan: Makanan kegemaran YB?
Jawapan: Patin atau ikan keli.

Soalan: Apa pendapat anda tentang Justin Bieber?
Jawapan: Muntah.

Soalan: Patutkah Mahathir kembali menjadi perdana menteri?

Jawapan: Hahaha. Tak akan. Saya tak kenal langsung beliau kecuali melihatnya di parlimen sahaja. Satu lagi pembohongan dan urban legend. Orang ramai percaya pada omong kosong.

A Reality Check

According to the UN 2010 MDG report, the percentage of poor Malays that live under the poverty line has reduced from 60% in 1989 to 40% in 2009.

In simple mathematics, a 1% reduction per year.

If that so, we could expect the figure to come down to 30% in 2019.

Is this an achievement? Let me leave you with a related article from The Malaysian Insider.

Malay poverty share falls, other Bumis still lagging
By Lee Wei Lian
April 28, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Despite making up only 11 per cent of the population, non-Malay Bumiputeras now make up about half of all underprivileged households, according to the UN 2010 Millennium Development Goal (MDG) report.

The report released today showed non-Malay Bumiputeras - most of whom are from Sabah and Sarawak, and who are Barisan Nasional's (BN) vote bank - making up about 50 per cent of all poor households in the country as compared with about 20 per cent in 1989.

The proportion of poor made up by Malay households, meanwhile, dropped from over 60 per cent in 1989 to about 40 per cent in 2009.

The share of Chinese and Indian households remained relatively stable during the same period, at less than 10 per cent.

The report also found that Sabah had the highest poverty rate in the country at 19.7 per cent.
The report noted, however, that from 1989 to 2009, the incidence of poverty among all ethnic groups fell by at least half.

Approximate incidences of poverty among Malay households shrank from about 17 per cent to three per cent, while for the Chinese it dropped from about three to one per cent. For Indians it was reduced from about six to three per cent and for non-Malay Bumiputeras, it fell from about 33 to 16 per cent.

The report attributed the disparity between the non-Malay Bumiputeras and the rest of the ethnic groups to the local geographical features of the East Malaysian states.

“As [non-Malay] Bumiputera live predominantly in East Malaysia where the geographical terrain poses severe limitations to building transport infrastructure and basic amenities, the relative disadvantage of this group stands out,” said the report.

The UN (MDG) comprises eight global, time-bound development goals, with targets to be achieved by 2015.

Kamal Malhotra, the United Nations Resident Co-ordinator for Malaysia, said in the report that while the country has achieved the aggregate MDG objective of halving poverty — which fell from 17 per cent in 1990 to eight per cent in 2000, and below four per cent in 2009 — rural Sabah was not on track to achieve the poverty MDG by 2015.

The MDG report found that 3.5 per cent of households are vulnerable, meaning that they have incomes 25 per cent or less above the poverty line.

Non-Malay Bumiputera were found to be the most vulnerable, followed by Chinese, Malay, Indian and other races.

The UN report also said the 2008-2009 global economic crisis had caused the national poverty rate to rise to 3.8 per cent of citizen households in 2009, representing an estimated 228,000 households and an increase from 210,000 households in 2007.

The national poverty line used in the report is a variable poverty line developed by the Malaysian government and defined by household size, composition and location.
In 2009, the mean national poverty line translated to RM6.50 per capita a day.

Thanks to Niza and her fiancee.

So, what you guys think of this song? Boleh cari makan tak? Anyhow, congratulations to all that involved in this project. You guys had once again done a good job. Keep up the good work and thank you to Ramlah Ram too, for having faith in these talented young people.

Enjoy u'ols :)

Ketentuan: What a promising comeback!

Hari ini adalah harinya! 3 Jun 2009, hari Rabu.

Tahniah FMC, and well done Ramlah Ram and her team!

Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical

Cuma susunan muzik lagu-lagunya kurang tempo keMELAYUan.

Tun Dr. Mahathir: I admit I'm wrong

I don't know what motivates me to say YES to Fendy when he invited me to join him and his friends to attend a talk by the former Prime Minister, organised by Kumpulan Prihatin Malaysia, in Manchester. And what puzzling me is, when it was free back then in 1999 I refused to attend it but this time, when it's not free, I decided to pay 8 pound sterling to listen to what Tun Dr. Mahathir wanted to talk. This is what I call 'pelik bin ajaib'!

Before I proceed with my take on Tun Dr. Mahathir's speech last Saturday afternoon, allow me to put forward my stance on budaya mengampu or what some people call as apple polishing. I have nothing against the act of giving out compliment, but I personally think the full title of this event is a little bit too much. Why can't they call it "Sejenak Bersama Tun Mahathir". Full stop. Why must add, "Jasamu Dikenang"? This reminds me of all those corny so-called patriotic songs on RTM. I still wonder until today, why must we thank Malaysia, instead of the Almighty God, for the prosperity and peace all this while? Hmmm...

It was a full house. As always, Tun Dr. Mahathir and Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah look very healthy and in the case of Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah, bubbly!

Frankly speaking, almost everything that came out from his mouth in that Saturday afternoon was not something that I haven't heard before, such as why he made so much noise about Pak Lah's administration and his unfavourable remarks on Anwar Ibrahim.

Nevertheless, the following revelations worth to be highlighted:
  1. Tun Dr Mahathir admited that he was wrong to proceed with the teach-Mathematics-and-Science-in-English policy. However, he explained that his intention is to improve the state of English among the Malaysian students as well as to spearhead the pursuit of knowledge which is vastly available in English.
  2. He didn't believe his people, including the police, when he was informed by them about Anwar Ibrahim's sex scandal until he met the victims/accussers (he said Azizan and the women) himself. One of them, even came with ibunya.
  3. "I don't read her (Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir) blog. Isteri saya sahaja yang baca".

And this is my response to the above:

  1. No one denies the importance of learning English in today's world, but the said policy is not the only remedy available at this stage. Why don't we start with capacity and capability building measures such as increase the number of teachers to teach English at school, especially in the rural and continuously enhancing the curriculum/module for English subject. Or at least, add more hours for English subject. Just to share my experience as a student tutor at the St. Wilfrid RC Primary School, here in Manchester, students are given the option to learn Mathematics in other languages such as Urdu and Polish. Anyhow, it is good to hear that Tun Dr. Mahathir has admitted his mistake. So, to present governments, be it kerajaan Barisan Nasional or kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat, please have the courage to admit your wrongs if you did any mistakes.
  2. This confirms my curiousity that Tun Dr. Mahathir belief of Anwar Ibrahim's homosexuality is based on allegation made by Azizan. Interestingly enough, Azizan had confessed when he was under the oath during the court trial that Anwar Ibrahim has never sodomised him. Jadi, macam mana sekarang ni?
  3. Since Tun Dr. Mahathir claimed that Pak Lah's administration has denied his right to meet and talk to rakyat by putting pressure on organisers to withdraw any invitation to him, I guess blog would be a better alternative for our ex-PM to put forward his constructive views/critics so that more people could read/listen to what he want to write/say. In addition, more rakyat could have the opportunity to post any comments or questions, and not constraint by time as compared to the Q&A sessions after his talks. Nowadays, more and more Barisan Nasional politicians have joined their counterparts from the Pakatan Rakyat in blogging. And thanks to Allah (instead of thanking Malaysia), our national security has yet to be compromised by any bloggers.

I still remember when the people asked Dr. Mahathir to step down in 1999, he said that he doesn't want to leave a weak UMNO to his successor but will do so at a stipulated time frame once UMNO and Barisan Nasional has successfully been rejuvenated. Similarly, Tun Dr. Mahathir should allow Pak Lah does the same thing, if Tun Dr. Mahathir is really a person who follows a tradition as he claimed he was.

"Zaman Tunku pun tiada perbahasan politik yang bebas. Zaman Tun Razak tak ada, zaman Hussein Onn pun tiada. Saya cuma ikut tradisi saja."

Mahathir, will always be Mahathir. He expressed his disappointment towards ungrateful politicians who he has appointed and groomed during his 22-years in power, but ended-up had 'maki'ed him after he retired.

I guess Tun Dr. Mahathir has also been affected by this so-called mudah-lupa syndrome, because even though PAS had given him the platform to continue his political career after he was sacked from UMNO, that doesn't stop him from attacking PAS. And as much as he reiterates that he didn't do any injustice to the person who he picked and groomed to be his successor, Tun Mahathir, based on his ranting last Saturday, seems to forget that he too has benefited from his association with Anwar Ibrahim especially in shielding his government from deadly attacks from PAS, especially on Islamic state and hudud. Or his second worst nightmare i.e. Team A versus Team B?

Wahai Tun... ada Melayu yang TIDAK MUDAH LUPA.

Another Weekend in Cricklewood, London

I've safely returned to Manchester yesterday afternoon about at 2 pm. After a tiring but worthwhilely awesome weekend, I had another long day yesterday. Got class at 3 pm and group discussion at 6 pm. I returned to my room at about 8.45 pm. I was not in the mood to cook neither to eat dinner, so I just spent my night uploading some pictures that I took in London using my aging Sony Ericsson walkman, checking my emails, messages on my social networking sites and enjoying lidah buaya that my mother sent here through Wan.

Okay guys, I'm not the mood for writing (due to several personal and academic reasons), so allow me to share with you some of the pictures I took last weekend. Will try to jot down description on some of these pictures to facilitate your viewing pleasure. Enjoy...

Two pictures taken from Tesco in Brent Cross: the first one is the Kosher food section and the second one is the self-service counter (I hope Tesco will introduce this in Malaysia soon). Give the customers the option to skip those stone-faced cashiers.

Next are pictures at the rewang session, attended by close friends to help out with the necessary preparations.
