Wealthiest self-made woman? It’s not Oprah!

It's official, Oprah is not the richest self-made woman in the world. The crown is now worn by a Chinese lady. And she's much richer than Malaysia's richest man.

(CNN) – In the world of wealthy women, China is leading the way.

Of 28 self-made female billionaires around the world, 18 came from China, according to a recent report compiled by Hurun Report ranking China’s wealthy.

Hurun reported that of the top 10 self-made female billionaires in the world, seven are Chinese. U.S. media mogul Oprah Winfrey barely made the top ten, with her $2.7 billion fortune putting her as the 8th richest self-made woman in the world. Rosalia Mera of Spain’s fashion powerhouse Zara came in third, with a net worth of $4.5 billion. Benetton clothing’s Guiliana Benetton’s $2.5 billion fortune put her at number 10, according to Hurun.

Wu Yanjun, executive director of Longfor Properties Co. based in Chongqing municipality, was also ranked the richest self-made woman in the world and the 7thrichest person in China with a net worth of 42 billion yuan ($6.6 billion). Yang Huiyan, of Country Garden Real Estate ranked as China’s second richest woman and 10thrichest overall with a personal fortune of 36 billion yuan ($5.6 billion), followed by Chen Lihua of Fu Wah International, an industrial investment company, whose 33 billion yuan ($5.2 billion) fortune made her the third richest woman and the 16thrichest person in China.

Of the top five richest women in China, four attained their fortunes through the country’s blistering real estate market.

The average wealth of the top 50 female billionaires in China was 9.7 billion yuan ($1.5 billion), up 47% from two years ago; the fortunes of 33 women on this year’s top 50 were self made rather than inherited, compared to 30 last year.

Hurun’s Top 50 Rich List on wealth in China shows the number of billionaires in China increasing to 271 individuals, compared to 189 last year and more than double 2009’s 130. This puts the number of billionaires in China as second only to the U.S., which has more than 400.

Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman and Chief Research at Hurun, noted that there were probably many more billionaires in China who preferred to remain off the radar.

The cut-off for Hurun’s list of the top 1000 richest people in China continues to climb, with this year’s cut-off at $310 million, up from last year’s $220 million and $150 million in 2009.

“China’s rich have defied the global financial crisis with another record year of growth,” said Hoogewerf.

This explosion of wealth means that some wealthy Chinese are turning to philanthropy to share their fortunes. According to the Huran Philanthropy List 2011, the most generous philanthropist, Cao Dewang of Fuyao Glass, donated $700 million this year. Cao has, to date, donated 40% of his assets to charity.

Ulang Terbit: Kisah Seorang Ratu

Sajak yang telah diterbitkan di Aku dan Sajak sekitar tahun 2001, adalah satu penghargaan buat emak dan ibu-ibu di seluruh dunia. Sesungguhnya dikaulah ratu yang bertakhta di hati.

Kisah Seorang Ratu

Subuh-subuh lagi
sudah bangkit
siapkan sarapan
sempurnakan perjalanan
Lakinya ke tempat rezeki
Anak-anaknya ke gedung ilmu
sebelum membangunkan negeri kecil.

Tika mentari condong ke barat
tegaklah dia di muka pinta
tunggu buah hati pulang
tiap-tiap isnin santak jumaat
tanpa mengeluh
tidak pun pernah kosong meja.

Bila senja mengetuk pintu

baliklah si jantung hati
bawa pulang riuh
bersama wajah yang keruh.

Makan malam mesti istimewa

mengisi perut-perut yang berat tulang
menyuap mulut-mulut yang rajin mmemerintah
menambah kedut di wajah.

Habis memasak

hadap pula kain baju nan membukit
hingga digamit-gamit
hasrat laki di penghujung hari.

The Lazy Country

An interesting article! Well, the lazy country was referring to Greece, in case you were wondering :)

Not to say that I'm all for the subsidy cuts, but the government needs political will to get rid of 'bad' subsidies, minimise leakages and combat corruptions.

I really hope that PM will introduce the following in the incoming Budget 2012:
1) food and transportation coupons
2) cut personal income tax
3) cut petrol & sugar subsidies
4) gives more details on the implementation of GST and cut duties on cars & spare parts
5) cut subsidy to IPPs

The lazy country — Tay Tian Yan

September 29, 2011

SEPT 29 — The menace that Greece poses to the world today is comparable to the threat of Alexander the Great to conquer the world 2,000 years ago.

Alexander the Great launched his tireless assaults across thousands of miles of terrain, much to the fright of the world.

Today, the self-destructive Greeks are taking global finance system for a ride, and vows to trample stock markets worldwide. The trumpets heralding an imminent downturn of global proportions chill the bones of many.

Two millennia ago, Greek troops scourged a vast mass of land stretching all the way to India, but the debt crisis of modern-day Greece has a spillover effect that easily wraps up the entire planet.

Just as governments across the world are cracking their heads to seek workable solutions to fix Greece's problems, and entrepreneurs and investors lamed under the mounting pressure thanks to the debt crisis of the Mediterranean state, the Greeks respond by holding one street party after another.

Greece's transport workers, civil servants, teachers, etc take to the street for massive strikes, which are pretty common in that country, some having their dates scheduled all the way to next month.

The objective of the demonstrations and strikes is to protest against the government's decision to trim wages, pensions, benefits and subsidies as well as an intention to perk up taxes.

The measures adopted by the Greek government have been made to satisfy the demands of the IMF and other creditors. Their rationale is straightforward: Greece needs to fix its own house before it can secure foreign assistance.

The Greek economy has headed downhill since its admission into the Eurozone club. Nevertheless, the government has remained lavishly generous and its people addicted to all the benefits and enjoyments befitting the people of a developed state.

Everyone wants a comfortable life, and the government has to issue bonds to meet their needs so that they can continue with their extravagant lives and the government continues to get a ticket to rule.

As such, the government hires a multitude of civil servants. One in 10 employed Greeks draws his salary from the national coffers, complete with all the perks.

In addition to easy work, they can advance their retirement benefits after they turn 40. In the event they die, their children can inherit the annuities.

The private sector is just as lucrative. The government continues to fork out medical subsidies, education, food and accommodation bills. You don't need to worry about the taxes, for the enormous underground economy offers a way out for tax evaders through bribes.

Over the decades, Greece has evolved into a lazy country, where the people are unproductive, the government incapable and the country uncompetitive.

When the mountain of debts begins to fall apart and all the prosperity turns into bubbles, the people remain recalcitrant with their good old life.

They would rather take to the street than to soberly accept a more simplistic and thrifty lifestyle. They believe they can go on with the good life by holding on to Euro Big Brother Germany or holding the world for ransom.

But the world has already got sick of Greece. Many economists feel that Greece should be thrown out of the Eurozone, or allowed to go bankrupt. Only utter destruction could give Greece a ray of hope for regeneration.

Lazy people should be made to bear the consequences of their own doings. Greece is not the only lazy state on this planet. — mysinchew.com

Betul-betul tak faham dengan orang-orang macam ini.

Mari kita sama-sama berhemah di jalanraya. Hargai nyawa dan harta benda kita semua.

Halal KFC @Green Hill Shopping Mall

To those who visiting Green Hill, Manila for pearls or cheap fabrics or cheap sourvenirs, you may stop by at its KFC for a nice meal.

However, they don't serve mash potato and coleslaw for snack plate. Instead, white rice that's wrapped like a square burger. Dan takde sos, tapi kuah cendawan pekat ala-ala chicken chop gravy.

Takpelah, asalkan halal. Layan...

Happy birthday Lan!

Moga murah rezeki, berkat usia.

The picture was taken during recent eid mubarak.

Despite being the youngest in the family, Lan is in fact the tallest and the most loved in the family. Manja tapi bertanggungjawab.

I'm so blessed to have a brother like you.

And happy birthday to Shukor Majid, a second cousin of mine which is the younger brother of Nazrol. All the best in your undertakings.

Dagang Avenue

Lama betul tak berkunjung ke Dagang Avenue Foodcourt. Terlanjur kawan-kawan ajak, aku pun turun mencemar duli ke sana.

Perkhidmatan masih memuaskan, cuma masakannya kurang sikit. Harganya macam sudah revised downward saja. Kalau betul, baguslah.

Hmmm...

Kota Bahru Trip 2011

Selamat Pengantin Baru Eila & Zul

Semoga berbahagia santak akhir hayat.

Juita, Rina and I flew all the way from Kuala Lumpur to attend the wedding of our colleague, Tengku Marzilawati Tengku Mohamd in Tanjung Chat, Kota Bahru, Kelantan. The wedding reception was beautiful and the food was delicious. The bride's maid is a friend of mine too, who looked gorgoues in pink baju kurung!

Suka tengok kedua-dua mempelai tersenyum gembira di atas pelamin. And certainly, green could be a nice colour to walk the aisle.

Don't you agree with me?

Manila Trip 2011

This is my second trip to Manila, but this time I stayed in Makati, the business and financial district of Manila. I was sent to attend a 5-day seminar on key performance indicators of development banks.

Unfortunately, I had a severe stomachache on the second day, it really affected me for the next few days. I think it was due to my late dinner the night before. I was circling the Greenbelt area, looking for halal restaurant. At the end, I just walked into a McD, and bought myself filet-o-fish and fries.

Halal food is really an issue in Manila!
